INGLEWOOD COMMUNITY CENTER

PROJECT SUMMARY

Client: City of Inglewood
Typology: Civic
Location: Inglewood, CA
Status: In progress

When approached by the City of Inglewood to re-envision a tired 1938 retail store in the heart of council district #3 as a community center and police substation, our first thought was how to make it inviting to the community. We relocated the front door to the corner facing the intersection, which allowed for ample exterior gathering space in front of the building. We chose to revive the building's original art-deco detailing and honor its place in the community. Inside, we created one large gathering space with an office, kitchenette and restroom to support it. We also opened the space onto a back courtyard, giving the community the option to gather indoors or outdoors. Space in the courtyard has been dedicated for murals to bring art into the space. Finally, an office space and restroom has been set aside for the police substation, offering officers more accessibility in the community.
